State Licensing
Teacher Licensing
Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is approved by the State of Maryland and Washington, D.C. to grant teacher licenses to UTC participants in the following areas:
Maryland
- Dual Early Childhood Grades (pre-K - third grade) and Special Education K-12
- Dual Elementary Education (first – sixth grade) and Special Education K-12
- Middle School Mathematics and English Language Arts (fourth – ninth grade) and Special Education K-12
Washington, D.C.
- Early Childhood (pre-K – third grade) and Special Education K-12
- Elementary Education (first - sixth grade) and Special Education K-12
- Middle-level Mathematics (fourth - eighth grade) and Special Education K-12
- Secondary English (seventh - 12th grade) and Special Education K-12
Teaching licenses are granted by state departments of education. To be eligible for licensure, candidates must be recommended and approved by a preparation program provider. UTC is an approved program provider, and to receive a UTC recommendation for state licensure, participants must:
- Complete all UTC program requirements, including demonstrated ability to improve student academic performance for the first two years of teaching (years two and three of the program)
- Pass Praxis I (prior to acceptance and start with UTC)
- Pass Praxis II in the related content area (taken in the spring of the UTC program year one)
Failure to meet these requirements will result in ineligibility for licensure and possible termination from UTC.
All UTC participants are required to earn a dual license with special education and pay for their own licensure tests (Praxis I and II). Individuals interested in teaching subject areas not licensed by UTC, can take additional Praxis II tests during UTC program year four. UTC participants should check with individual state’s licensing regulations as they are subject to change.
UTC’s philosophy is to train teachers in the core subjects. These foundational teaching skills and content areas are transferable to other grades and content areas upon completion of the program. UTC looks forward to adding middle grades science as well as English, mathematics and science at the high school level to future programming.
