Who we are looking for

UTC looks for exceptional individuals who have a demonstrated commitment to or interest in public service, who have a relentless desire to improve educational outcomes for urban youth, and who have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. 

UTC looks for results-oriented college graduates and career-changers that do not have a formal education background or prior teacher license, and have strengths in the following five dispositions:

  • Academic Performance: Strong critical thinking skills, creative and innovative, subject matter expertise
     
  • Relentless Pursuit of Results: Perseverant, resilient, resourceful
     
  • Emotional Intelligence: Responsive to and seeks feedback, demonstrated humility
     
  • Commitment to Children and Youth and Educational Equity: Belief in the academic potential of every child
     
  • Team Player: Excellent interpersonal skills, good listener and observer, collaborative

Though it is not essential, UTC also looks for individuals who have volunteer or work experience with children and youth, preferably in an urban setting, such as City Year, Breakthrough Collaborative and Higher Achievement. Individuals must have a 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA or higher and NOT major in education.
